Ingredients

For the batter:

  • One cup of fine cornmeal
  • One cup of all-purpose flour
  • Two tablespoons of granulated sugar
  • Two teaspoons of baking powder
  • One teaspoon of salt
  • One teaspoon of paprika (optional, for a smoky kick)
  • One large egg
  • One cup of milk (or a non-dairy alternative like almond or oat milk)
  • One-half cup of sparkling water (for a light, airy batter)

For the filling:

  • Eight halal-certified sausages
  • Eight wooden skewers or popsicle sticks

For frying:

  • Vegetable oil or sunflower oil

Instructions

Prepare the Sausages:

  • Insert skewers into the sausages, leaving enough stick to hold comfortably. Pat sausages dry to help the batter stick better.

Make the Batter:

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and paprika.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg, milk, and sparkling water. Slowly pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients, stirring until smooth.

Heat the Oil:

  • In a deep pot or fryer, heat oil to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (use a thermometer for accuracy).
  • Coat the Sausages:
  • Pour the batter into a tall glass for easy dipping. Dip each sausage into the batter, ensuring an even coat.

Fry to Perfection:

  • Gently lower the coated sausage into the hot oil. Fry for about 3–5 minutes or until golden brown, turning occasionally.

Drain and Serve:

  • Place fried corn dogs on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
