Ingredients

  • 4 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 3 tablespoons butter or olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 4 cups halal vegetable or beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar (optional, for depth)
  • 1 baguette, sliced
  • 1 cup grated halal-certified Gruyère or mozzarella cheese
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

Caramelize the Onions

  • Heat butter in a large pot over medium heat. Add onions and sugar.
  • Sauté, stirring occasionally, until onions are golden and caramelized (about 25 minutes).

Make the Broth

  • Add balsamic vinegar (if using) and broth to the pot. Simmer for 20 minutes.
  • Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Assemble and Bake

  • Preheat your oven to broil. Ladle soup into oven-safe bowls.
  • Top each bowl with a baguette slice and a generous amount of cheese.
  • Broil until cheese is melted and golden.
