Ingredients

For the Mashed Potatoes:

  • 2 pounds russet potatoes (or Yukon Gold for a creamier texture)
  • ½ cup halal butter (or plant-based butter for a dairy-free option)
  • ½ cup whole milk (or non-dairy milk for a vegan version)
  • 1 teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

For the Halal Gravy:

  • 2 tablespoons halal butter (or olive oil)
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups halal chicken, beef, or vegetable broth
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

Prepare the Potatoes

  • Peel and chop the potatoes into evenly sized chunks to ensure even cooking.
  • Place the potatoes in a large pot, cover with cold water, and add a pinch of salt. Bring to a boil and cook until the potatoes are tender, about 15–20 minutes.

Mash the Potatoes

  • Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot. Mash using a potato masher or hand mixer.
  • Add butter, milk, salt, and pepper. Mix until smooth and creamy. Adjust seasoning to taste.

Make the Halal Gravy

  • In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour, whisking constantly to create a roux. Cook for 1–2 minutes until lightly golden.
  • Gradually add the broth, whisking to prevent lumps. Stir in onion powder, garlic powder, pepper, and salt. Simmer for 5–7 minutes, or until the gravy thickens to your desired consistency.

Serve

  • Transfer the mashed potatoes to a serving bowl and create a small well in the center. Pour the gravy into the well and garnish with chopped parsley for an elegant touch.
