A Closer Look at the Ingredients

Small swaps make a big difference. Here’s what to look for when you shop.

Cheese rennet

What to watch for: Traditional parmesan uses animal-derived rennet which may be non-halal.

The halal solution: Substitute with halal-certified parmesan or nutritional yeast for umami flavor.

Notes From My Kitchen

  • Brown your halal beef in a pan first for deeper flavor before slow cooking.
  • If using dried beans instead of canned, soak them overnight first.
  • For extra richness, stir in a spoonful of halal beef tallow at the end.
